Make A Wish

My last post for the year and a quick one at that. I had my last gig for 2011 yesterday. It was as MC for a Make A Wish Christmas luncheon onboard P&O’s Pacific Pearl docked at Auckland. Pacific Cirque performed some suitably impressive thing that we should not try at home. I interviewed the Wish Child about his going to the Rugby World Cup and meeting the All Blacks. I sold raffle tickets, toured the ship and much money was raised.

What impressed and pleased me greatly was their focus. It wasn’t entirely on the Wish Child, who by definition has a life threatening condition, and feeling sorry for anyone. It was very much about creating magic and enriching lives – generating some positivity where it can only do a lot of good. And it was about doing that for everyone involved not just the Wish Child. What a great idea!

I’ve written a lot about focus. Always sounds good but it can sometimes blind us. If we’re focusing solely on a ‘sick’ child, that ends being all we see. Redirect the focus and so much more is visible. The whole child, their future, the family, the volunteers, everyone involved. All of whom are having their lives enriched.

And there was dessert – chocolate!

About Terry Williams - The Brain-Based Boss

I'm all about engaging people and helping you engage yours to influence behaviour to improve results - at work and at home. Maybe you're a manager, a salesperson, a leader, a parent, a presenter or an event organiser? You need to grab your people's attention, create some rapport, be memorable and influence behaviour change. How can we do that? I'm originally a trainer by trade, turned manager, turned comedian and partway back again. Author of 'THE GUIDE: How to kiss, get a job & other stuff you need to know', I write and speak about how to engage people, be they employees, family or yourself. How can we connect with people’s own internal motivations and help them use their own inner passions to drive towards productivity, success and happiness? And hopefully have a few laughs along the way... As a trainer facilitating learning and development in others, I find myself drawing on my own extensive business experience. I specialise in the delivery of high impact, customised training solutions for organisations that are serious about improving the performance and lives of their people.

  1. Great thoughts on focus Terry. We are taught to focus “like a laser beam” but we need to make sure that what we are focusing on is the “right” thing. I have a grand-daughter born with only half a heart and know from personal experience that if we as a family were only to focus on her as a “sick” child we wouldn’t see the miracle that she is and the myriad of blessings she has brought to our entire family in her 12 short years of life thus far!
